dishes

I finally went through AwesomeHusband's great-grandmother's dishes.  The dishes were given to her as a wedding gift in 1900. His mother passed them on to us for our wedding. I'm thrilled with them.  Some of it is in perfect condition, some of it is stained and showing severe wear.  I don't care.  I just think about how many meals over the last 110 years were served on these dishes.  I feel connected back to AwesomeHusband's family in a  tangible way.

3  of the teacups broke in transit.  We only have 6 left.  :(  Of course, the only thing that there are 12 of is the saucers and the butter pat dishes.  We do have at least 6 of everything and mostly 8 to 9 of them.  I search ebay and tias.com all the time to see if I can find anything else. Unfortunately, when I do the pattern--it's usually in blue and ours our green and gold.  I even registered at Replacements, LTD so if they get any pieces in, they can notify me.

Now that it is unpacked, counted, and I can put them into proper china keepers.  I can't bear the thought of only using them once a year or less.  They are fantastic.  Since I'm slowly trying to become more observant, it seems only fitting that this should also be the Shabbat dinnerware.

In other news, I'm really tired of sorting crap and re-arranging it.  The house is a disaster zone.  Piles of things to go to the dump. More piles of things to go to the 2nd hand store.  Boxes that have never been unpacked (not mine!!).    The closets that are done are lookin' fabulous, tho.  I am a stellar organizer.  I love the end product but this middle part? Eh, I could leave it.

  1. Can you post a pic? Or do you have the name of them so I can look them up? I'll keep my eyes open for them.

BTW, I was thinking that keeping kosher provides part of the solution to the factory farming dilemma.

  2. Ooo! You being on the East Coast might have an easier time than me finding it!
It's JW Weatherby & Sons "Maltese" in green. Here is a gnarly link to what the pattern looks like:

It wouldn't be my first choice in a pattern, but I'm in love with knowing that his great-grandmother served her best meals with it. I could care less about the pattern.

Funny you should mention keeping kosher as I've been thinking about that more and more (along with dressing modestly more and more and flirting with the idea of starting to cover my head. Separate post perhaps.) I'm interested in becoming more kosher but also sort of terrified of it. So many rules. I don't want to be as neurotic as it seems I have to be to observe being kosher. I have the same issues with Shabbat. I really need to talk to a rabbi.
